Inspect and Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades the Right Way | Penney Auto Body & Glass Vancouver

Windshield wipers tend to be an overlooked part of a car’s safety system. If your wipers are not working properly, it can be difficult to see the road or other hazards when it rains or snows or if debris is falling onto your windshield.

Poorly working wiper blades can be ineffective and even cause smear marks to your windshield, potentially creating visibility issues. Some basic, regular maintenance can help ensure your wipers are in tip top shape.

Inspect Your Wipers Often and Consistently

Your car's wiper blades are made out of rubber and can wear down even with limited use. The blades need to be inspected regularly and replaced every six to 12 months, if needed. If your blades are full of cracks or even torn, they might not cling to the windshield properly and can struggle removing mud, rain, sleet or snow. For more information on maintaining your blades, check your owner’s manual and the information that comes with your wiper blades for guidance.

Replace Your Wipers

It's pretty easy to change your wiper blades, but if you're uneasy about it, bring your car to your dealership or to a trusted local auto body. If you decide to replace the wipers yourself, follow these steps:

First, measure the wiper blade length or check your car’s owner’s manual for the correct blade size.

Second, remove the old wipers. Remove one wiper arm away from the windshield and depress the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the wiper arm. When the tab is depressed, slide the wiper blade off the arm by pulling downward. Repeat with the second wiper arm.

Third, attach the new wiper blades. Pull one wiper blade tight onto the arm. You will hear a clicking sound when it locks into place. Lower the arm slowly back onto the windshield and repeat this process with the other arm.

Fourth, test the wipers after installation when it's convenient rather than when it's raining.

Taking the above steps can help make sure your wipers are working efficiently and maximize your visibility for safer driving.
