What to do After a Collision With an Animal | Penney Auto Body & Glass Vancouver

Animals may look friendly and innocent, but every year over 10,000 people are sent to the hospital and over 200 people are killed in animal-related accidents. Large animals like moose and deer can cause physical harm, but also cause major damage to your car.

These collisions are not always preventable, but we have some tips for what you can do if you do get into an accident with an animal of any size.

Your Checklist After A Collision With An Animal

  • Safely pull over to the side of the road
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • If you leave your car, remain on the side of the road, out of traffic
  • Stay calm
  • Don't approach the animal. It may still be breathing and may harm you.
  • Call 911 and ask for help, particularly if the animal is blocking the road
  • Set up road flares if you have them.
  • Contact your insurance company
  • If there is property damage complete an accident report for insurance purposes
  • Contact your nearest auto body shop or towing company.
  • Take photographs of the accident and its surrounding areas and any damages.
  • Record the contact info of any eyewitnesses and write down their information.
  • Don’t think the vehicle is safe to drive after an animal collision. Check for leaking fluid, loose parts, tire damage, broken lights other safety hazards after an accident.
